About Renaissance Theatre

COMMUNITY

Renaissance Theatre maintains a long standing practice of outreach through our non-monetary contributions to various non-profit & charitable organizations.

SHOWS

Renaissance Theatre performs five shows each year that are chosen by the Board of Directors. We hold auditions for each show approximately eight weeks before performances begin.

READINGS

We encourage local playwrights to showcase their original works in our play reading series, Renaissance Readings.

The Renaissance Theatre Company is the longest running volunteer community theatre in Lynchburg, Virginia, functioning as a board run 501(c)(3) charitable arts organization since incorporating in January of 1988. Renaissance began performing in various venues and after spending some time as a dinner theatre on Bedford Avenue, the company leased and renovated a small black box theatre space in downtown Lynchburg.  The theatre seated approximately 80 people and Renaissance performed in this space from early 2000 until the summer of 2020 when extraordinary challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, rendered the intimate space unsafe for performances.

Beginning in August 2020, Renaissance entered into a collaboration with the Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Department to become the “Theatre in Residence” at the historic Miller Center on 301 Grove Street in Lynchburg. Moving from the former location allows Renaissance the ability to have multiple venues including a state of the art 180 seat theatre, outdoor parks, and enables them to continue to offer black box style theater in the beautiful Aviary venue.  Welcome to the Renaissance!

OUR MISSION

Renaissance Theatre’s mission is to create opportunities for community involvement in the arts through live theatrical experiences. With productions from the classics to new works, Renaissance engages the community, as both participants and audiences, in outstanding artistic shows that inspire, challenge, entertain, and most importantly, contribute to the vitality of the performing arts in Lynchburg.
